NARRATION
Now why this man’s soul was bleedingthe angel had to understandso invisible, he stood by himand then gently touched his hand
which caused the man to stand there stilldespite the winter’s coldand while he stood there in that trancethe angel read his soul
it seemed the man was not always likethe man he had becomeand that angel wondered how that change had happenedand when it had begun
the man had been born to a kind and religious familyand raised in the midwestand all throughout his childhoodthis man, clearly, had been blessed
he grew up believing, among other thingsman was made in the image of godhe went to school, observed all ruleswhile working very hard
he had always tried to help othersexcelled at nearly every taskand when he’d graduated high schoolof course, he was the first one in his class
and in his eighteenth summerwhen it was time for him to leavehe had offers from several collegesall of them ivy league
and at college in all his studieshe always received straight “a”sand when he tried his hand in theaterhe got the lead in the senior play
it appeared to nearly everyonethere was no talent that he lackedand for three years on the football teamhe was, the star quarterback
and there he also met the girlwho did become his wifewith her, his world was now completehe had the perfect life
when they had graduated collegethey were wed in a ceremony quite grandthen they moved to new yorkin a dream they seemed caughtwhere all had been perfectly planned
she decorated their park avenue apartmentin a 1920’s art-deco styleand six months after they had moved inshe told him, they would soon be having a child
and after their first ultrasoundhe knew they were having a sontheir lives could not have been betterand they had only just begun
together they arrived early at the hospitalon the delivery datethe father was taking no chancesand did not want to risk being late
but while waiting outside the delivery roomhe could tell that something was going wrongfor too many doctors were rushing inwith none coming out for too long
when her own doctor finally came outwith several nurses at his sidehe said that his wife had started hemorrhagingand despite their best efforts, she died
then in an effort to console hima nurse gave him his newborn to holdbut from the way the child felt limp in his armshe knew there was still more bad news to be told
the doctor then gave the prognosisas gently as anyone couldbut before he could finish explainingthe father only too well understood
the child had been cut off from oxygenfor minutes, which is far too longthe damage was now irreversiblehis brain permanently malformed
he’d never hold a job, learn to read or ever talkand it would be a miracleif the child even learned how to walk
and with those words the father felthis entire world falling apartand he stumbled for the words to expressthe tearing inside of his heart
he cried out, why did god have to take herwhile she was still so youngand then as if to cut him deeperleave this thing here as his son
“please explain to me god’s wisdomhow could he decideto take from me my precious wifewhile leaving this alive
there is no reason for this lifewhy does he even existand if he had never been bornthere is no way he’d have ever been missed
if man is made in god’s imagethen something here is surely amissfor there is nothing of godnothing of godnothing of godnothing of godnothing of god in this”
and then he asked for the childto be placed in a state run homeand after he had signed the papershe walked into that night alone
and in this world he found unkindhe built a wall around his mindand every year he’d add new partsuntil it had also enclosed his heart
he kept his job and paid his debtsas he slowly became a silhouetteof a man walking among the tombswhile living his life within his wounds
he distanced himself from all his friendseven his sisters and brothersand as time it went by, he developed his eyesso they could only see the flaws in others
with this final glimpse, the angel stepped awayand the man shook himself out of his trancethen continued his walk back towards his homeand few would have given his soul half of a chance
and the angel himself felt helplessas he watched that old man thereso he did what even humans doand he quickly said a prayer
and as the prayer flew to his lordthe angel did decideto carefully follow the old manand stay closely by his side
for on this night can one denythe gift of a more sympathetic eyeto cast upon our fellow manand on this night to understand
the frailty of childhood dreamslike fireflies over summer streamsand if one dared to remove time’s veilcould one retrace those childhood trails?
but whispers in the winter’s windtold of rescued dreams, forgiven sinsand who among us shall be deemedto rescue some forgotten dream?
so on this night of christmas eveas once again the spirits weaveits snowswept dreams and colored lightswith bits of magic into each life
and as the snow comes gently downits soul intent to reach the groundto cover scars the world still feelsperhaps to give them time to heal
for as men invest in moneyand professors in what they knowgod invests in mercylike winter invests in snow
THE WISDOM OF SNOW
