When I was six or sevenMama tucked me inWith a lullabyeAnd it made my eyesOpen wide againI'd lie awake and wonderWhy a boy named Billy JoeJumped off the Tallahatchee BridgeTo the river far below
(Chorus)Blame it on Mama and the songs she loved to singI'm not from Louisiana, but that don't mean a thingDon't come from Alabama or hail from TennesseeJust blame it on MamaShe sang the country into me
I just loved to listenAs she sang those story songs'Bout a Coat of Many ColorsOr a girl named Delta DawnWhen The Lights Went Out In GeorgiaI would beg for just one moreAll about Fancy and the pretty red satinDancing dress she wore
(Repeat Chorus)
I'm a Coal Miner's DaughterLovin' that preacher's sonI've walked the Streets of LaredoStared down the barrel of a lawman's gunI've grown roots and I've got tiesTo places I've never beenAnd when I sing those songs it takes meRight back home again
(Repeat Chorus)
The country into me, yeah
