I guess you had your reasonsFor the way you used to beDon’t why I couldn’t please youYou just never had much faith in meThere’s fine dust in the tire ruts nowAlong the old feed roadThey’re workin’ on a six year droughtJust so you know
I can pull my weightI can hold my ownI can sling that blade all summer long‘Til the thistles fall And the pasture’s clearAnd the work’s all done for another yearI can hold my own
The world was like a distant stormI could feel it on the breezeBut it made so little difference hereJust a whisper in the treesMending fence for room and boardWas mostly all I’d doneFor I was still a prisoner hereIn 1961
The sucker rod on the windmill creaksNow and then you hear a carThere’s thunderheads across the southern skyBut they won’t get this farThere’s red ants by the graveyard gateThey’re nearly all that movesAnd they carry on despite this heatI bet you’d tell me what that provesThere’s fine dust in the tire ruts nowThe creeks no longer runBut I am just a visitor hereThe drought won’t hurt me none
