I made a trip back to my hometown last weekFor my grandparent's 50 year anniversaryIt was black leather wingtips, and big bouffant hairYour typical senior affair
They were cutting a rug to a Glen Miller tuneWhen someone stood up and tapped a glass with a spoonIt was old Eddie Vicker's, granddaddy's best manAnd his very best friend to this dayAnd his eyes grew misty as he raised his champagne
He said, here's to the makers of things built to lastLike church bells and bridges, and baseball on grassLike Ferguson tractors and Lucchese bootsMy daddy's old tools I still use
The pledge of allegiance, the stars and the stripesThe words in the Bible, the sun in the skyAnd here's to the twinkle in old married eyesStill there after fifty years pastHere's to the makers of things built to last
We live in a world now of plastic and glueDisposable honor, replaceable truthIf a pot breaks, why fix itMan, what's the useIt costs less to buy it brand new
Oh, but lately I've looked in the eyes of my wifeAnd I see there what matters the most in this lifeAnd I have decided I'm taking a standTo stay on that fifty year planInspired by the words of a very wise man
