On a trading path, through the CarolinasUsed by Indians who braved the wind & rainThey settled down beside the raging watersAnd they worked the land until the white men came and formed the countiesAnd they took away their land and made the boundariesGoverned with a heavy hand and you canAlmost hear the song of that old IndianLonging for his homeAlong the waters edgeClimbing mountains to escape the laws of white menWalking softly in the rain... and talking to the wind
They were friendly and they rode on painted horsesFearing no one, not harming anythingThey were trusting when the pilgrims came to live hereThey died by the hands of the menWho formed the countiesAnd they took away their landAnd made the boundariesGoverned with a heavy hand and you can
Almost hear that sad song of that old IndianCrying for his homeAlong the waters edgeClimbing mountains to escape the laws of white menWalking softly in the rain... and talking to the wind
They were trusting when they taught us how to live hereThen they scattered to the windLeaving only tears behind themAnd an old forgotten artAnd all their memoriesDying with a broken heart
Almost hear the song of that old IndianLonging for his homeAlong the waters edgeClimbing mountains to escape the laws of white menWalking softly in the rain... and talking to the wind
