As we were out a-huntingOne morning in the springBoth hounds and horses running wellMade the hills and the valleys ring
But to our great misfortuneNo fox there could be foundAnd our huntsmen cursed and swore but stillNo fox moved over the ground
And upspoke our master huntsmanAt the head of Hounds rode heWell we have ridden for a full three hoursBut no fox have we seen
And there is strength still in meAnd I will have my chaseAnd if only the Devil himself'd come byWe'd run him such a race"
Well then there sprang like lighteningA fox from out of his holeHis fur was the color of a starless nightAnd his eyes like burning coals
And they chased him over the valleyAnd they chased him over the fieldsThey chased him down to the riverbankBut never would he yield
And he's jumped into the waterand he's swam to the other sideAnd he's laughed so hard that the greenwood shookAnd then he's turned to the hunt and cried:
"Ride on my gallant huntsmen when must I come again?Oh never shall you want for a fox to chase all over the plainAnd when your need is greatest, just call upon My NameAnd I will come and you shall have the best of sport and game"
Well the men looked up in wonderAll the hounds run back to hideFor the fox had changed to the Devil himselfAs he stood on the other side
And the men, the hounds and horsesWent flying back to townAnd hot on their heels come a little black foxLaughing as he ran
"Ride on my gallant huntsmen when must I come again? For never shall you want for a fox to chase all over the glenAnd when your need is greatest, just call upon My NameAnd I will come and you shall have the best of sportin' again"
